About Us

The Newark Area Welfare Committee is a completely volunteer organization with no paid positions. We rely on volunteers in all phases of our operation from the raising of funds to the actual disbursements of assistance to the community.

We continue to serve the community with our Emergency Assistance Program, Food Cupboard, Holiday Food Boxes, and Shoes for Needy Children. Over 2,900 individuals in the Newark area receive assistance in one form or another.

Our funds come from donations from local individuals and businesses, charitable and service clubs, grants from the City of Newark, and State of Delaware, New Castle County, The Wilmington Flower Market, Good Neighbor Day, sale of our Bean Soup mix, The Christmas Shop, and response to our annual appeal letter.

The committee would like to thank all the members of our community who have donated money, food, or time to our efforts. Without all this volunteer help none of this would be possible.

Here's How You Can Help
  • Volunteers make it happen! Join us by becoming a member of the committee so that more families can have the necessities needed to live decent, healthful lives. Fill out the contact us form to become a member.
  • Donate food to our food cupboard or volunteer your time once a month.
  • We have a major mailing to the Newark community for funds. If you would like to be added to our mailing list, please fill out the contact us form.
  • Donate a frozen turkey and/or canned food for our Holiday Food Boxes.
  • On "Good Neighbor Day" in October, members conduct a fund solicitation in the Newark area. We always need volunteers for this endeavor.

Funds collected go directly to help those in need. Contributions are tax deductible.
